Golf arrived in Japan in 1901 but the 1930 visit of British architect C.H. Alison did more to shape its identity than anything before or since. Alison introduced deep, steep-faced bunkers that became a defining feature of Japanese course design. Today, Japanese golf is characterised by high maintenance standards, strict etiquette, and a mix of pre-war classic design and modern championship venues. Most top courses are private, but access is possible with the right connections or a specialist travel operator.
