The Vibe
Yokohama Country Club represents the new vanguard of Japanese golf. While the club has a long history, the West Course was completely transformed in 2016 by the world-renowned team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. They took a traditional Japanese layout and injected it with their signature minimalist, strategic philosophy. The result is a course that feels both ancient and modern — where the land is used perfectly and every shot requires careful thought. The conditioning is, as expected for a club of this stature, flawless.
The Vault Line — The Coore & Crenshaw Magic
The redesign of Yokohama West is often cited as the project that brought modern architectural principles back to the forefront of Japanese golf. Coore & Crenshaw removed thousands of trees to restore vistas and encourage the wind to become a factor. They also replaced the traditional dual greens with large, undulating single greens that feature complex "short grass" surrounds. This encourages a variety of recovery shots, from the low-running bump-and-run to the high flop — a rarity on traditional Japanese courses.

The Access Intelligence
Access Reality
Private — Invitation Only
Yokohama Country Club is an exclusive private institution. Access for non-members is strictly via an invitation from a member. The club does not have a formal visitor policy or public booking system. For international visitors, the best hope is through a direct connection with a member or a reciprocal agreement with a top-tier international club. If granted access, be prepared for a very traditional Japanese club experience, where etiquette is strictly observed.
Note: Caddies are mandatory, and walking is the traditional way to experience the West Course.
Tactical Strategy Guide
The Short Grass Defense
At Yokohama West, the challenge doesn't end when you miss the green. Coore & Crenshaw have designed expansive short-grass collection areas around nearly every green complex. Instead of the ball stopping in thick rough, it will often roll 20-30 yards away from the hole. This tests your imagination: do you putt from off the green, hit a low spinner, or use the slopes to feed the ball toward the hole? Spend some time on the practice green working on these "tight lie" recovery shots.
The Insider FAQ
How close is it to Tokyo?
Yokohama CC is very accessible from Tokyo. It is about a 45-60 minute drive from central Tokyo, or a short train ride followed by a 15-minute taxi from Yokohama Station.
What is the 'East Course' like?
The East Course at Yokohama is a more traditional Japanese parkland layout. It is highly regarded but lacks the architectural "wow factor" of the Coore & Crenshaw West Course.
Is the club international-friendly?
While the club is traditional, they are accustomed to hosting international guests through their membership. English is spoken in the pro shop and by some caddies, but knowing a few basic Japanese golf terms is always appreciated.
