Wentworth (West)

The legendary birthplace of the Ryder Cup. Now shrouded in deep exclusivity, the West Course demands pure, tree-lined precision and aggressive water carry on the climactic par-5s.

The Vault Line

Insider Tactical Briefing: The West Course is a 'tee-shot course' above all else. The mature pines and heather lining every fairway mean a missed drive puts you behind a tree, not in rough. Caddies from the BMW PGA Championship emphasise one rule: when in doubt, play to the centre of the green. The tiered putting surfaces punish the wrong approach tier more than any bunker. The swirling winds inside the tree corridors make club selection genuinely unpredictable - always check the treetops, not the flag.

The Access Masterclass

How To Book

Members and Guests Only: Wentworth is a strictly private club with no public visitor tee times. The only route to playing the West Course is as a guest of a current member. The club does not advertise green fees, does not list availability, and does not accept cold visitor enquiries.

The Social Engineering Play: Connect with Wentworth members through the BMW PGA Championship pro-am ecosystem, corporate golf networks, or premium concierge services such as Connoisseur Golf or Halcyon Golf Travel, who hold established member relationships. This is the one route that consistently works for non-member access.

Dress Code: Jacket required for gentlemen in the clubhouse after 6pm. Collared polo shirts mandatory on the course - no exceptions regardless of brand.

Logistics

2026 Green Fee

No public green fee. Wentworth operates on a membership model (annual fees exceed GBP 20,000). Corporate day rates when facilitated through premium operators range from GBP 400-600 per person inclusive of full hospitality.

Getting There

London Heathrow (LHR) - 25 minutes by car or chauffeur transfer. Virginia Water station (Waterloo line, 55 min from London Waterloo) is 12 minutes from the club entrance by taxi.

Shadow Gem: West Hill Golf Club, Surrey

Harry Colt's other Surrey heathland masterpiece and genuinely one of England's finest courses. Visitor-friendly Monday-Friday, bookable within 4-6 weeks, green fees around GBP 120-160. The identical pine-and-heather aesthetic to Wentworth at a fraction of the exclusivity barrier.

Tactical Strategy Guide

The Burma Road - Manage the Tee Shot First

Wentworth's nickname 'The Burma Road' refers to its relentless, unforgiving length. The strategic formula is identical on every hole: find the fairway, then think about the green. Missing the fairway into the mature pines and heather routinely means 'punch out and accept bogey' rather than attempting a recovery shot. Club down on doglegs - position beats distance every time on this course.

The Par 3s - Respect, Don't Attack

The par 3s at Wentworth are among the hardest on the European Tour calendar. Caddies consistently advise aiming for the centre of the green on all four par 3s - the false fronts and slope-heavy surfaces mean attempting a flag position risks a slope-driven ball ending below the tier, leaving an impossible uphill chip. A two-putt par from the middle of the green is the correct target on every par 3.

The Insider FAQ

1. Can I play Wentworth as a visitor without a member?

No. Wentworth is strictly private. Public visitor tee times do not exist. You must be a paying member of the club or the guest of a current member to gain access to the West, East, or Edinburgh courses.

2. Does Wentworth host corporate golf days for non-members?

Yes, but on a very limited and highly curated basis. Corporate days are arranged through the Club's Events team and require significant lead time and spend. Premium golf travel operators such as Connoisseur Golf and Halcyon can facilitate this.

3. What is the dress code policy?

Collared polo shirts mandatory on the course at all times. Jacket required for gentlemen in the clubhouse dining areas after 6pm. Smart casual throughout all other areas. Denim, trainers, and cargo shorts are not permitted anywhere on the estate.

4. Is the West Course open on weekends?

For members, yes. For guests, availability is at the discretion of the member host and subject to tee time availability. Peak weekend slots are heavily contested by the membership itself.

5. What is the best time of year to visit Wentworth?

Late May through June, when the BMW PGA Championship has just been played and the course is in peak condition from tournament preparation. September is also excellent as summer membership competition pressure reduces.
