The Vibe

Waterville is the ultimate romantic links. Situated on a remote peninsula in the Ring of Kerry, it combines massive, prehistoric dunes with a sense of isolation that is hard to find elsewhere. While it dates back to 1889, the modern layout was perfected by Tom Fazio, creating a course that feels both ancient and immaculately polished. It was the favorite Irish haunt of Payne Stewart, who is commemorated here with a life-sized statue.

How To Book

The Kerry Window: Waterville is one of the most popular links in Ireland. Booking for the following year typically opens in August/September. Unlike some UK courses, Waterville has a very efficient online inquiry system, but peak summer times are often snapped up by US-based tour operators.

Insider Tip: If you are a single golfer, call the pro shop 48 hours before you want to play. They are excellent at slotting individuals into existing threeballs.

Logistics

2026 Green Fee

Estimated at €350 per person for peak summer months, with shoulder season (April/October) rates around €280.

Closest Airport

Kerry Airport (KIR) is the closest (approx 1h 15m), but most international visitors fly into Shannon (SNN) or Cork (ORK) and drive the Ring of Kerry.

Tactical Strategy

The Mulcahy (18th): One of the most famous finishing holes in the world. A long par 5 that runs parallel to the Atlantic surf. The prevailing wind is off the left; use the dunes for cover but don't get trapped in the deep gorse.

The Mass Hole: Watch out for the 12th, a par 3 where Catholic masses were held in secret in the hollow behind the green during penal times. It's a daunting shot into a bowl of dunes where anything short is dead.
