The Vibe

Pinehurst No. 2 doesn't rely on water or mountains for beauty; it relies on strategy and the 'short game from hell'. The fairways are wide and lined with sandy wiregrass, but the challenge begins the moment you hit the green. The ball doesn't just stop; it rolls off into deep collection areas.

The Vault Line — The Inverted Saucer

Ross's greens are legendary. They are highest in the center and slope away on all sides. An approach hit just slightly off-center will catch a slope and end up 20 yards away. Putting is often easier than chipping from the tight-lie collection areas.

Tactical Strategy Guide

The Art of the Lag Putt

Because the greens are so severe, you will often face 50-foot putts with 10 feet of break. Strategy is to always miss short-center; any miss long or side-on leads to a certain three-putt or worse.

The Insider FAQ

Do I have to be a good golfer to enjoy No. 2?

It is a very punishing course for high handicappers because of the greens. However, the lack of forced carries makes it playable. Just prepare to chip a lot.

What's the best second course to play?

Pinehurst No. 4 (Gil Hanse) or No. 10 (Tom Doak) are world-class. The Cradle is a must-play 9-hole short course.

Is it caddie-only?

No, but caddies are highly recommended. Forecaddies are also an option if you prefer to drive a cart.
