The Vibe

National (or 'NGLA') is a museum of golf design. Macdonald traveled the UK and identified the best holes in existence, then 'template' versions of them at NGLA. It is quirky, beautiful, and incredibly fun to play. It feels more like a grand estate than a modern golf club.

The Vault Line — Template Awareness

To play NGLA well, you must understand 'Template' holes. You will play a Redan (par 3), an Alps (blind approach), and a Road Hole (modeled after St Andrews). Each demands a specific strategy that has been tested for over 150 years.

Tactical Strategy Guide

The Alps (17th)

A par 4 with a completely blind second shot over a massive hill (the 'Alps'). Strategy: Use the aiming pole on the horizon. If you hit it over the pole, you will find a massive green protected by a deep bunker modeled after Prestwick.

The Insider FAQ

What is a 'Template' hole?

A template hole is a design concept based on a famous hole from the UK (like the Redan at North Berwick). Macdonald believed these were the 'ideal' versions of golf holes.

Is it right next to Shinnecock?

Yes, the two courses are literally adjacent. You can see Shinnecock's clubhouse from many holes at NGLA.

What is the most iconic hole?

The 17th (Alps) and the 18th (Home) with its views of the windmill and the bay are the most photographed.
