The Vibe

The Berkshire (Red) is widely considered the most fun and varied course in England. Designed by Herbert Fowler, it winds through a forest of towering pines and flowering heather. The unique layout of six par 3s, six par 4s, and six par 5s ensures that you never feel ground down by long par 4s. It's a course of high drama, massive elevation shifts, and pure aesthetic beauty.

How To Book

The London Loop: The Berkshire is a private club but welcomes visitors on weekdays. Their online booking system is excellent and usually shows availability 3-4 months in advance.

Insider Tip: Try to book the "36-Hole Day" which includes lunch and a round on both the Red and Blue courses. The lunch at The Berkshire is legendary (jackets required in the dining room).

Logistics

2026 Green Fee

Expect to pay £210 - £250 for a single round on the Red, or roughly £325 for the 36-hole day with lunch.

Closest Airport

London Heathrow (LHR) is just 20 minutes away, making this an ideal round for the day you land or the day you fly out.

Tactical Strategy

Master the Par 3s: With six par 3s, your mid-iron play must be precise. The greens are often well-guarded by steep banks and deep bunkers. Don't be afraid to take one extra club and play for the back of the green.

Elevation Awareness: Holes like the 10th and 18th feature significant drops or climbs. Gravity will affect your ball flight more than you think. Trust the local yardage guide over your laser if the two disagree.

Insider FAQ

1. Red or Blue? Which should I play first?

Both are world-class, but the Red is generally ranked slightly higher and is the primary championship course. If you only have time for one, play the Red.

2. What is the dress code?

Standard golf attire on the course. In the clubhouse, a jacket and tie are typically required for the main dining room at lunch.

3. Is it a hilly walk?

It has some significant elevation changes, but it's a very pleasant walk through the pines. Pull trolleys and electric trolleys are readily available.
