The Vault Line
Insider Tactical Briefing: The Himalaya bunker on the 4th is over 40 feet deep and 25 feet wide - the deepest fairway bunker on any Open Championship rota course. When you are inside it, there is exactly one objective: escape. Take your most lofted club, aim out sideways, and accept your double-bogey. Attempting to advance toward the green from inside the Himalaya is how you make a 7 or 8 on a par-4. Missing left of the bunker is almost always preferable to any shot that risks the face.

How To Book
Verified 2026 Visitor Schedule: Visitors are welcome on Tuesdays only in February, March, November, and December. From April through October (peak season), visitor access expands to Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This is one of the most restrictive visitor schedules in England - only two days per week during summer.
How to Book: 3-balls and 4-balls book online at royalstgeorges.com. Singles and 2-balls must email reception@royalstgeorges.com directly. Full payment is required at time of booking. Cancellations are partially refundable only up to six months before play.
The 18.4 Rule: A handicap index of 18.4 or lower is mandatory for all visitors. This is verified at check-in on the day. An index of 18.5 or higher results in refusal of play with no refund.
Dress Code Trap: Golfing attire is acceptable until 11:00am. After 11am, a jacket and tie is mandatory for gentlemen in the clubhouse. Tailored shorts are permitted on the course with knee-length socks. Jeans and trainers: not permitted anywhere on the property.

Tactical Strategy Guide
The Himalaya (4th Hole) - Escape, Don't Attack
The Himalaya bunker at the 4th is the most intimidating individual hazard on any Open Championship rota course. It is 40 feet deep, 25 feet wide, and positioned on a towering dune to punish anything right of centre. For most visitors, the only correct strategic question is: 'How far left can I miss and still have a reasonable approach?' Aim at the left edge of the fairway off the tee. The left rough at the 4th leaves a genuine birdie opportunity. The Himalaya from the inside leaves you needing three more shots just to make bogey.
The 11th (Maiden) - The Right Miss, Always
The 11th (Maiden) is a 226-yard par 3 over a ridge of sandhills - one of the most demanding par 3s in championship golf. The key intelligence: the right side of this green is the correct miss. Anything left feeds down into a severe hollow where par from pitch shots is essentially impossible. Club selection is critical - the hole plays into the prevailing south-westerly in many conditions. Many experienced visitors play 2 full clubs more than the yardage suggests and aim for the right half of the green.
The Insider FAQ
1. What is the exact handicap requirement?
18.4 index or lower for all visitors. This is the officially published and strictly enforced limit. An index of 18.5 will result in refusal, and the green fee is non-refundable.
2. What days can visitors play in summer?
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from April through October. Tuesday only in February, March, November, and December. No other visitor days are available regardless of circumstances.
3. Is lunch included in the green fee?
Yes - at GBP 400 (peak season), the fee includes a two-course dining room lunch. This is part of the Royal St George's experience and not optional. The Trophy Room dining room is a genuine highlight.
4. What is the dress code after my round?
After 11am, jacket and tie is mandatory for gentlemen in the clubhouse. This catches many visitors off guard. If you arrive after 11am, go directly to the pro shop without entering the main clubhouse until you are properly attired.
5. Can I book a tee time more than 12 months in advance?
The booking portal opens for the year at a set date published by the club. Check royalstgeorges.com in November/December for the opening date for the following summer season. Peak Tuesday and Wednesday slots disappear within hours of opening.
