The Vibe

Originally laid out by Harry Colt, Royal Portrush is routed through the massive, cavernous sand hills along the North Atlantic edge. It is deeply respected as one of the hardest, yet fairest links in the world, featuring dramatic elevation changes and a notorious 16th hole ("Calamity") that relies entirely on natural terrain—rather than a single bunker—to strike fear into players.

Tactical Strategy Guide

Caddie Tip

Calamity Corner (16th): This legendary Par 3 is an uphill 236-yard beast entirely carrying over a massive 50-foot chasm to the right. The local play is strictly to bail out short and left into "Bobby Locke's Hollow" and rely entirely on your wedge game to scramble a par.

The Penal Fescue: Portrush's rough is thick, tangled, and penal. Driver is rarely the required club off the tee; keeping the ball below the heavy oceanic wind and staying on the short grass is your only path to scoring.

The Insider FAQ

1. What is the handicap requirement?

Portrush demands an official handicap maximum of 18 for men and 24 for women. Valid digital certificates are checked by the starter before teeing off.

2. Is "Calamity" really that difficult?

Yes. Hole 16 is a 236-yard shot completely exposed to the wind over a sheer 50-foot drop-off. Making a 3 here often feels like eagle.

3. Do I need to hire a caddie?

It is incredibly highly recommended. The severe elevation changes, blind approaches, and local wind reading demand local knowledge.

4. When is the best time to play?

The shoulder months of late May or September offer more availability on the tee sheet, but the oceanic wind is a massive factor year-round.

5. Are buggy carts allowed on the links?

No. Portrush is proudly a walking-only championship links. Medical exemptions are extremely rare and strictly vetted.

6. Which course actually hosts The Open?

The Dunluce Links. The neighboring Valley Links is a fantastic track in its own right, but the Dunluce is the historic Open venue.

7. Where did Shane Lowry win his Claret Jug?

Right here in 2019. He conquered the Dunluce Links in biblical conditions, sparking legendary local celebrations across the island.

8. How far is the drive from Belfast?

It is roughly a 60-to-70 minute scenic drive straight north from the Belfast city center right along the stunning Antrim Coast.

9. Is there a strict dress code indoors?

Standard proper golf attire applies on the links. Inside the clubhouse, smart casual is required to enter the dining and bar areas.

10. Are the 17th and 18th holes the original finish?

No. Two stunning new holes (now the 7th and 8th) were built into the dunes prior to the 2019 Open, dramatically enhancing the championship layout.
