How To Book

The Tee Sheet Release: Royal County Down releases visitor tee times for the following season in the spring of each year — historically in late February or early April. The exact date is not publicly announced, so contact the club at reservations@royalcountydown.org in November/December to confirm the opening date, then call +44 (0)28 4372 3314 the moment bookings open.

The 18-Month Horizon: Peak summer slots (Monday and Thursday mornings in June-August) disappear within hours of the tee sheet opening. Planning a Royal County Down visit requires booking 12-18 months in advance. If the tee sheet is full, golf travel specialists such as Perry Golf maintain allocations and can sometimes deliver access at shorter notice at a premium.

No Online Booking: There is no online tee time portal. All bookings are by phone or email only. Visitor tee times available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sundays (afternoons).

Tactical Strategy Guide

Caddie Tip

Visual Deception: Most tee shots are blind. You will see a "Marker Post"-aim 2 yards left of every post. The wind almost always off the Irish Sea (right-to-left) pushes balls toward the heather.

The Green Speed: RCD greens are famously "oscillating." They aren't just fast; they are exposed. If the wind is gusting over 35mph, the starter may suspend play because the ball will move on the green.

The Insider FAQ

1. What is the handicap requirement?

18. They will ask to see a digital certificate (GHIN or IGOLF) at the pro shop.

2. When is the best time of year to play?

May through September offers the driest and most playable weather.

3. Can I pay the starter if I get selected?

No. Full prepayment is required via BACS or card upon booking confirmation months in advance.

4. Do I need to walk the course?

Yes. Royal County Down is a walking-only course. Caddies are highly recommended.

5. Is there a dress code?

Traditional golf attire. No denims, athletic gear, or untucked shirts. Collar and jacket required in certain clubhouse rooms.

6. How early should I arrive for my tee time?

At least 30 minutes prior to present your certificate and meet your caddie.

7. Can I rent clubs?

Yes, titleist rental sets are available in the pro shop inside the clubhouse.

8. Where is the best place for a post-round pint?

Go to The Percy French. Order the "Mourne Seafood Chowder" and a Guinness. It is the unofficial "19th hole" where the caddies hang out.

9. What happens if it rains?

The "Mourne Mist" is real. If you can't see the mountains, the rain is 10 minutes away. Bring a high-end Gore-Tex suit; the wind here shreds cheap plastic ponchos.

10. Is the course open on Sundays?

Unlike many private UK clubs, RCD allows visitors on Sundays, but only after 2:00 PM. This is often the quietest and most atmospheric time to play.
