Insider Tactical Briefing: There is no online booking for Royal Aberdeen - the club requires all visitor enquiries by email to reservations@royalaberdeengolf.com, with payment due within 30 days of making the booking. The front nine runs directly along the North Sea coastline and is exposed to every direction of wind. The inward nine turns back toward the town and is significantly more sheltered. The key tactical insight: the front nine is where your round is won or lost. Score aggressively on the outward nine when the wind is manageable. The back nine will look after itself.

Tactical Strategy Guide

Front Nine - Score While the Conditions Allow

The Balgownie Links outward nine runs directly along the North Sea coastline and is fully exposed to all wind directions. When the wind is cooperative (south-westerly, behind on the outward holes), holes 1-9 can genuinely be played under-par by a low-handicap golfer. The same nine holes in a north-easterly become a survival test. Check the wind forecast the night before and adjust expectations accordingly: this is one of the few courses where the wind genuinely determines what score is realistically possible before you leave the hotel.

The 6th Hole - Right-Centre Every Time

The par-4 6th at Balgownie is consistently rated among the finest strategic holes in Scottish links golf. The tee shot navigates a narrow gap between dune ridges. The instinctive line is toward the left edge of the dune to open up the green angle - resist this. The left catchment is deeper than it appears and collects offline shots aggressively. The correct play: drive to the right-centre of the fairway, accepting 180 yards into the green. This line leaves a more demanding approach but from a flat lie, with full control of the shot shape.
