The Single Most Important Thing: Ohope Beach is a narrow strip of land sandwiched between the Ohiwa Harbour and the Bay of Plenty. The course is essentially one long out-and-back loop. The key is accuracy over distance — the fairways are bounded by scrub and sand dunes. If you can't keep it straight, you'll be reaching for the 're-load' ball early. Trust your hybrid or 3-wood off the tee.

How To Book
Booking: Contact the club via their website or phone. They have a very welcoming 'Kiwi' attitude toward visitors. It's rarely 'fully booked' except during major local holiday periods (January).
Location: 10 minutes from Whakatane. If you're touring the East Coast of the North Island, this is a mandatory stop. It's about a 1-hour drive from Tauranga.
Insider Tip: The sea breeze usually kicks in around 1:00pm. If you want to post a score, get an early morning tee time. If you want the full 'links experience', play in the afternoon and embrace the wind.
Tactical Strategy Guide
The Harbour Side vs Ocean Side
The holes on the harbour side (inward) are slightly more protected but the water is a constant psychological threat. The ocean side (outward) is where the wind really bites. The greens are generally small and require precision — don't try to overpower the course.
Sand and Scrub
The course is built on pure sand, which means the bunkers are natural and the rough is often just loose sand and scrub. Recovery shots can be tricky — if you're in the sand outside the bunkers, treat it like a fairway bunker shot and pick it clean.
