Why New Zealand Changed the Global Conversation

In 2015, Tom Doak opened Tara Iti on a Pacific dune north of Auckland. Within five years it ranked #19 in the world — higher than Augusta National. New Zealand had been building world-class courses for decades: Kauri Cliffs in 2000, Cape Kidnappers in 2004, historic Paraparaumu Beach in 1949. But Tara Iti confirmed what the best course architects had quietly understood: New Zealand possesses some of the finest golf terrain on earth, and the designers who have worked here have largely treated it with the respect it deserves.
