The Vibe

Royal Wellington carries the weight of New Zealand golf history more than any other club in the country. Founded in 1895 at Miramar, Wellington — one of the oldest clubs in the Southern Hemisphere — it moved to its current Heretaunga site in 1908 and was granted the Royal title by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004, the first and only golf club in New Zealand to receive this distinction. The 2013 redesign by Greg Turner (New Zealand's most successful professional golfer) and Scott Macpherson transformed the course while retaining its established trees and historic character. It hosted the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship — the region's most prestigious amateur event.

The Vault Line — The Weight of the Royal Title

The Royal title was granted in 2004 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. This is not a nominal distinction: the club's relationship with the R&A, its championship history (multiple NZ Opens, 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur), and its role as Wellington's premier golf institution give it a gravitas that goes beyond the physical course. Playing Royal Wellington is not about the scorecard. It is about joining more than a century of New Zealand golf history at the only club in the country the Crown has chosen to honour with its name.

Tactical Strategy Guide

The Hutt River Boundary

The Heretaunga Course uses the Hutt River as a strategic boundary on several holes — it is out of bounds, and its presence demands accurate driving on the right side of the course. First-time visitors consistently over-compensate by aiming hard left, into rougher terrain bordering the parkland interior. The correct play on river-adjacent holes is a controlled draw that uses the river as a visual reference without targeting it. Know which side of the fairway is out of bounds before every tee shot — the first-visit mistake is not knowing, and discovering it on the walk to your ball.

The Insider FAQ

Is a handicap certificate checked at the gate?

Yes. A valid handicap certificate or WHS handicap index is required for visitor play. Digital certificates (Golf Link, GHIN, IGOLF) are accepted at the pro shop.

What is the dress code?

Traditional golf attire on the course. Jacket and tie are required in the formal dining room. Smart casual is acceptable in bar areas. No denim, no athletic wear, no untucked shirts.

How does the 2013 redesign compare to what came before?

Greg Turner and Scott Macpherson's redesign is widely regarded as an improvement — particularly the holes near the Hutt River, which now use the river more strategically, and the new green complexes, which are more demanding without being unfair. The redesign retained the mature tree corridors that define the parkland character.

How far is it from Wellington city centre?

Approximately 35 minutes via the Hutt Valley motorway from Wellington CBD. Easily combined with a Wellington city stay — the capital offers excellent food, culture, and Te Papa Museum for non-golfing days.
