The Vault Line

Insider Tactical Briefing: North Berwick's stone walls are not obstacles - they are part of the playing surface. On the 13th (The Pit), a ball striking the stone wall and rebounding onto the green is exactly in play. The local rule on this is specific and the starter will brief you. The trap that kills scorecards: on the 15th (Redan), attempting to carry the green directly from above always runs through. Enter the Redan from front-left and let the slope feed the ball toward the pin - the design rewards the bounce, not the carry.

Shadow Gem: The Glen Golf Club, North Berwick

Tactical Strategy Guide

The Stone Wall Rules - Know Before You Tee Off

North Berwick has ancient stone walls that actively intersect the course - and they have specific local rules. A ball striking a wall and rebounding into play is in play. A ball going over a wall onto a road or adjacent property is out of bounds. The starter at North Berwick conducts a brief local rules briefing - attend it. The 13th hole (The Pit) specifically: the wall behind the green is technically in bounds, and balls rebounding back onto the green from it have legitimate historical precedent.

The Redan (15th) - Bounce, Don't Carry

The 15th at North Berwick is the original Redan - the template copied at courses worldwide, including National Golf Links of America. The design principle: the green is angled left-to-right, with the back-left corner raised. The correct shot is not a direct carry to the pin. Play front-left of the green and let the slope carry the ball right and back toward the flag. Attempting to fly the pin directly results in the ball spinning off the back of the elevated green into an impossible position.
