Tactical Strategy Guide
Caddie Tip
Elevated Tees: Murcar features spectacular elevated tees that give you a panoramic view of the North Sea, but expose your ball to relentless coastal winds. Keeping the ball flight piercing and low is essential.
The Gorse: The fairways are framed by punishing, thick gorse. Accuracy off the tee here is far more valuable than sheer distance; hitting into the gorse is an automatic lost ball. Know your lines and do not get greedy off the tee.
The Insider FAQ
1. Is it better than Royal Aberdeen?
It’s different. Royal Aberdeen has arguably the best front nine in golf, but Murcar is more dramatic and elevated throughout, providing a slightly more wild, rollercoaster experience.
2. Do I need a caddie?
Yes, particularly for your first time. There are numerous blind shots and undulating fairways where local knowledge of the optimal lines will save you half a dozen strokes.
3. Are buggies allowed?
Murcar is a traditional walking course. Push trolleys are available, but ride-on buggies are strictly limited to those with medical certificates, booked well in advance.
4. How close is it to Trump International?
It's just a 15-minute drive north to Trump International Scotland, making it very easy to play both on consecutive days or even a 36-hole day in summer.
5. Is it a tough walk?
It's moderately challenging. The terrain is very undulating and the dunes are massive, so expect a solid physical test, especially if the wind is blowing hard.
6. What is the signature hole?
The 7th, "Serpentine," is widely considered one of the finest and most visually intimidating par 4s on the Scottish east coast, demanding a precision drive and an uphill approach.
7. Does it have a driving range?
Yes, it has excellent practice facilities including a driving range, short game area, and practice putting green, which is a great bonus before tackling the links.
8. Can I play it in the winter?
Absolutely. Like most top links courses, Murcar drains exceptionally well and plays superbly year-round, offering massive value during the off-season.
9. What is the handicap limit?
While visitors are expected to be competent golfers, there is no strict handicap certificate enforcement, though maintaining a good pace of play is heavily monitored.
10. Are the greens fast?
During the summer season, the greens run exceptionally true and fast. The coastal winds can make them notoriously difficult to read and putt on effectively.
