The Single Most Important Thing: Karamea is the absolute end of the road on the West Coast. The course is a 9-hole layout played twice from different tees to make 18. The highlight is the 'back nine' (the second loop) where the dunes on the seaward side become more pronounced. The sand is everywhere — embrace the ruggedness and don't expect perfectly manicured greens. This is golf in its rawest form.

How To Book
Booking: No formal booking system. Just turn up and pay via the honesty box at the clubhouse. It's almost never busy. You might be the only person on the course.
Location: 3 hours north of Westport. The drive through the Buller Gorge and then up the coast is spectacular but long. This is a trip for the serious golf pilgrim.
Insider Tip: Bring your own snacks and water. The clubhouse is often unmanned. Also, keep an eye out for Weka (local flightless birds) on the fairways — they are curious and might try to steal your ball!

Managing the Sand
The soil at Karamea is very sandy, meaning it stays dry but can be quite soft in places. Don't try to take big divots; pick the ball clean off the turf. The wind off the Tasman Sea can be brutal, so keep the ball flight low whenever possible.
The Second Nine Mindset
When playing the loop for the second time, the angles change significantly. Pay attention to the flag colors or markers to ensure you're aiming at the right green. It's easy to get disoriented in the dunes if you're not paying attention.
