The Single Most Important Thing: On a clear day, Hokitika offers what many consider the best view in New Zealand golf. Mount Cook (Aoraki) and Mount Tasman rise majestically to the east, while the Tasman Sea crashes against the shore to the west. The wind is the absolute master here. Don't fight it — use it. The course is built on firm, sandy soil, so expect plenty of run on your shots.

How To Book
Booking: Very casual. You can book via their website or just turn up. They are incredibly friendly and the course is rarely crowded.
Location: Right on the beachfront in Hokitika. It's a 3-hour drive from Christchurch via Arthur's Pass — one of the world's great road trips.
The Conditions: Being on the West Coast, it rains... a lot. However, the sandy base ensures the course remains playable even after heavy downpours. In fact, some of the best rounds are played here in 'clearing showers' when the light on the mountains is ethereal.
Tactical Strategy Guide
The Shoreline Holes
The holes that hug the beach are the most exposed. The wind usually comes off the sea, so you'll be playing a lot of shots with the ball moving right-to-left (for a righty). Allow for more movement than you think — the wind at sea level is heavy and will push the ball further than expected.
Managing the Firm Fairways
The fairways are naturally firm and fast. Aim to land your approach shots 10–15 yards short of the greens and let them release. Trying to 'stick' a high wedge is a recipe for a 20-foot putt back to the hole.
