Hillside Golf Club

The finest back nine in links golf. Nestled in the massive dunes of the Southport coast, Hillside is a strategic masterpiece that rivals its Rota neighbors.

The Vibe

Hillside is a course of two halves. The front nine is flat and strategic, winding through the lower land near the railway line. The back nine, however, is legendary. Greg Norman once called it the best back nine in the world. It plunges into massive, prehistoric dunes that provide breathtaking views and daunting shots. It's a high-drama links that feels like a cross between Royal Birkdale and Ballybunion.

How To Book

The Southport Spike: Hillside is extremely popular and often hosts major championships like the British Masters. Booking for the peak summer window typically opens in the Autumn of the previous year. Visitor play is generally available on weekdays.

Insider Tip: Check for "Twilight" rates in the peak summer months. Playing the back nine as the sun sets over the Irish Sea is one of the greatest experiences in the game.

Logistics

2026 Green Fee

Expect to pay between £225 and £275 for a peak time. Shoulder season rates are significantly more accessible.

Closest Airport

Liverpool John Lennon (LPL) and Manchester (MAN) are both roughly 50-60 minutes away. Southport is extremely well-connected by rail to Liverpool city center.

Tactical Strategy

Survive the Front: The front nine is where you must build your score. Use the flat fairways to find your rhythm before the course changes character entirely at the 10th.

The 11th Tee: Take a moment on the 11th tee. It's one of the highest points on the course and gives you a panoramic view of the Southport links belt. The shot itself is a daunting par 5 into a narrow valley; favor the left side for the best angle.

Insider FAQ

1. Is it as good as Royal Birkdale?

It's different. Birkdale is more consistent and championship-grade, but Hillside's back nine is arguably more spectacular and dramatic. Many visitors prefer Hillside for its sheer "wow" factor.

2. What is the dress code?

Standard golf attire. The clubhouse is welcoming but traditional—smart casual is required in the bar and dining areas.

3. Can I walk?

Absolutely. It's a classic walking links. The dunes on the back nine are steep, so ensure you have comfortable, waterproof shoes.
