Ballybunion (Old)

Nestled towering above the Atlantic, Ballybunion's Old Course is a staggering labyrinth of fescue-covered dunes. The back nine is arguably the most dramatic stretch of coastline in golf.

The Vault Line

Insider Tactical Briefing: The club mandates that every visiting group has at least one caddie or fore-caddie - and this rule exists for good reason. Ballybunion's back nine is genuinely disorienting without local knowledge, with blind shots, tee pads on cliff edges, and greens that appear nowhere until you are standing on them. The 17th hole in particular: the flag is invisible from the fairway. Your caddie's line is the only line. Trust it completely or accept the consequences.

Tactical Strategy Guide

The Back Nine - Atlantic Battle Protocol

Holes 12-15 on the Old Course play directly into or across the prevailing south-westerly off the Atlantic - this is where scorecards are destroyed. The correct strategy is a deliberate one: accept that your iron distances will reduce by 15-20% in typical conditions. Budget for bogeys on 12, 13, and 14. The scoring holes that matter are 1-5 (outward, with the wind) and 16-18 (relatively sheltered finishing holes). Protect the first five holes and the last three. Survive the middle.

Caddie Intelligence - Use Every Word

Ballybunion caddies are among the best in Irish golf - many have been looping the Old Course for 20+ years, through every wind condition that exists. Ask your caddie specifically: which way the wind is moving on each hole, where the pin is even when you cannot see the flag, and which half of every fairway opens up the green. Many of the best plays at Ballybunion look wrong until you see where the ball ends up. Follow the caddie's line, especially on the 8th, 11th, and 17th holes.
