How To Book

The "Struie" Hook: If you cannot get a tee time on the Championship Course, book a round on the Struie Course (their second 18). It's excellent links golf for £60, and it puts you "in the system," making you a priority for Championship cancellations.

The Stay & Play: Booking a room at the Royal Golf Hotel (overlooking the 1st tee) used to grant preferred tee times. In 2026, check their "Local Resident" guest policy for 48-hour lead time openings.

Logistics

2026 Green Fee

Closest Airport

Inverness Airport (INV) is 1 hour south.. Renting a car or pre-arranging driver transfers is highly recommended.

Tactical Strategy Guide

Caddie Tip

The Dornoch Bump: The greens are shaped like upside-down saucers. If you aim for the pin and miss by 1 yard, the ball will roll 20 yards away. The Hack: Play for the front of every green. Let the ball run up; flying it to the hole is a recipe for a 6-on-the-card.

The 14th (Foxy): There are no bunkers, but the double-plateau fairway is a nightmare. Aim further left than you think; the slope is a "ball magnet" for the gorse on the right.

The Insider FAQ

1. What is the handicap requirement?

24 for men and 35 for women. The starter verifies physical or digital certificates.

2. When is the best time of year to play?

June, July, and August offer peak links turf conditions and extremely long daylight hours.

3. Can I pay the starter if I get selected?

No, green fees are fully paid online exactly at the time of booking months in advance.

4. Do I need to walk the course?

Yes. Buggies are restricted entirely unless a medical certificate is provided.

5. Is there a dress code?

Smart casual golf attire. The clubhouse environment is welcoming but traditional rules apply.

6. How early should I arrive for my tee time?

Arrive 90 minutes early. The Donald Ross Room in the clubhouse is a museum of golf history. It is mandatory viewing for any "Brief" reader.

7. Can I rent clubs?

Premium rentals are available but must be reserved prior to your arrival.

8. Where is the best place for a post-round pint?

The Eagle Hotel. It's a 2-minute walk from the 18th green. It is where the "real" Dornoch happens - ask for a local Highland malt from the Clynelish distillery.

9. What happens if it rains?

Play continues under all conditions except active lightning.

10. Is the course open on Sundays?

Unlike St Andrews, Dornoch is vibrant on Sundays. It is often the best day to witness the local "Town vs. Gown" club matches.
