The Southern Cliffside Titan: Torrey Pines
Land in San Diego, collect the rental car, and head north to La Jolla's coastal cliffs. Torrey Pines South is a massive, severe test of championship golf. Lined by iconic Torrey Pine trees and boasting views of the crashing Pacific Ocean, the course features thick, penal ryegrass rough and firm, undulating poa annua greens. Keep your drives in the fairway to survive.
The OC Coastline: Pelican Hill
Drive north to Newport Beach. Pelican Hill's Ocean South course, designed by Tom Fazio, snakes down through deep coastal sage canyons right to the water's edge. The course offers wide, manicured fairway landing zones, spectacular ocean vistas on almost every hole, and striking, bright white bunkering.
The Holy Grail: Pebble Beach
Welcome to the holy grail of American public golf. Pebble Beach wraps spectacularly around Carmel Bay. The iconic ocean stretch from the par-3 7th, across the sweeping cliffside par-4 8th, through the terrifying cliffside 9th represents the most thrilling, wave-lashed sequence in the game. Small greens and severe ocean crosswinds demand severe strategic flighting.
The Masterpiece: Cypress Point
Cypress Point is Alister MacKenzie's absolute masterpiece. Playing through pine forest, into massive sand dunes, and concluding with a breathtaking trio of ocean cliffside holes (including the legendary par-3 16th over the ocean cove), it is widely considered the most beautiful course in the world.
The Toughest Test: Spyglass Hill
Spyglass Hill is a tale of two courses. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the opening five holes wrap through massive, ocean-view sand dunes. From the 6th hole onwards, the course dives deep inland, transforming into a grueling, tree-lined test protected by ponds, elevated greens, and severe bunkers.
The Dunes & Bagpipes: Links at Spanish Bay
Play a Scottish-style dune links set right on the water's edge. Spanish Bay features fescue fairways, pot bunkers, and sandy wasteland rough. The course wraps through rolling dunes with constant sea spray. Conclude the round as the iconic bagpiper plays at sunset, transitioning you into the evening.
The MacKenzie Masterclass: Pasatiempo
Conclude the trip by driving north to Santa Cruz. Pasatiempo is Alister MacKenzie's favorite layout—he loved it so much he built his home adjoining the 6th fairway. The course features some of the most dramatic, complex bunkering and severe, multi-tiered greens in the country, demanding extreme strategic control.

What to Skip
Skip driving all the way from San Diego to Monterey in a single day. The 6-hour highway trek through Los Angeles traffic will exhaust you and ruin your rhythm. Settle in Newport Beach first, then catch a quick 1-hour hopper flight from John Wayne Airport (SNA) directly to Monterey (MRY), picking up a second rental car there.
What to Add (2 Extra Days)
If you have extra days, add Valley Club of Montecito near Santa Barbara—a spectacular, ultra-exclusive Alister MacKenzie private sanctuary. Caddies are highly recommended at Pebble Beach and Spyglass. Standard caddie fees are $150 per round, plus a recommended cash tip of $50-$100 depending on performance. Ensure you carry sufficient US dollar cash as caddies cannot accept credit cards.
